Hayes Road stays shut to 7 October; a Cray Avenue lane is closed to 13 November; Perry Street is down to signals; no Bromley North trains on 10 October.
Bromley roadworks come from three different road authorities at once: Transport for London on the red routes, the council on everything else, and the utility companies digging under both. Add a rolling resurfacing programme and the picture gets hard to follow. This page keeps it straight. It covers what is genuinely disrupting traffic now, what is coming in the next fortnight, and the live maps that always have the current answer. It also carries the evergreen facts: who runs which road, and where to park at the stations.
Updated 2 October: Perry Street has dropped from a full closure to temporary signals, a new lane closure on Cray Avenue runs to 13 November, and the A21 lights at Cherrycot Hill end today. Correction: earlier versions of this page gave TfL’s start and end times an hour early. TfL publishes them in UTC, and every time below is now UK time.
Hayes Road is still shut, and the date to watch is Wednesday 7 October. TfL has kept the closure at Cameron Road going to 18:00 that day, which will make it six weeks. Perry Street in Chislehurst is open again under temporary signals after three days closed. The new job is a southbound lane closure on Cray Avenue in St Mary Cray, booked until 13 November. On the railway, the one to plan for is 10 and 11 October, when no trains run to Charing Cross and the Bromley North branch loses its Saturday service.
What is on the roads right now (checked 2 October 2026)
TfL’s records list five live jobs in the borough in the early hours of Friday 2 October.
- Hayes Road (B2212) at Cameron Road, Bromley (BR2). Closed in both directions until 18:00 on Wednesday 7 October. Emergency works, closed since midday on Wednesday 27 August (record TIMS-233994). It was first due to reopen on 25 September; TfL moved the end date on 29 September and has not changed it since. TfL’s advice is to use another route, with delays possible on the diversion. Hayes Road links Bromley Common and Hayes, and plenty of drivers use it to avoid the A21.
- Cray Avenue (A224) at Cray Valley Road, St Mary Cray (BR5). One southbound lane closed until 18:00 on Friday 13 November. UK Power Networks works, in place since Wednesday 30 September (record TIMS-235686). TfL says delays are possible. Cray Avenue is one of the main routes between St Mary Cray and the A20, so expect a slower run southbound at peak times for the next six weeks.
- Perry Street (A222) at Beaverwood Road, Chislehurst (BR7). Temporary signals, both directions. TfL changed the record on Thursday evening from a full closure to signals for the Thames Water works, and reports no delays (record TIMS-235624). The record’s end time, 23:59 on Thursday 1 October, has passed, but the job was still listed after midnight.
- A21 Farnborough Way at Cherrycot Hill, Orpington (BR6). Two-way temporary traffic signals until 17:00 on Friday 2 October (record TIMS-228867). If they stay up after that, the live maps below will show it.
- A232 Croydon Road at Oakley Road, Keston (BR2). Overnight temporary signals until 06:00 on Friday 2 October for emergency SGN gas works, set up at 19:00 on Thursday (record TIMS-235731). TfL reports no delays.

Buses: Perry Street diversions end on Friday, and still no R5 or R10 to Knockholt
Perry Street, Chislehurst, until Friday 2 October. TfL’s bus notices have not caught up with the road reopening to signals. They still list these changes until the end of Friday 2 October:
| Route | What TfL says |
|---|---|
| 160 | Diverted both ways. Stops from Leas Green to William Barefoot Drive are not served. |
| 269 and SL3 | Diverted both ways. Stops from Leas Green to Bromley Lane/Chislehurst War Memorial are not served. |
| 625 (school route) | Starts and finishes at Leas Green on Perry Street. Stops from Beaverwood Road to Bromley Lane/Chislehurst War Memorial are not served. |
The 638 school route no longer appears in the list.
Rushmore Hill, Pratts Bottom: R5 and R10 cut short. Emergency works on Rushmore Hill mean buses are not running the full route. They are not serving Rushmore Hill or Sevenoaks Road, and they start and finish at the Three Horse Shoes. There is no service between Green Street Green roundabout and Knockholt Pound in either direction. TfL posted the notice on 23 September and still gives no end date. The works do not appear in TfL’s road disruption list, which only records the bigger jobs, so the bus notice is the only public sign of them.
Just outside the borough, route B14 is diverted via Sidcup High Street and Rectory Lane until 23:59 on Friday 2 October for gas works on The Drive, Sidcup. The Hail and Ride section on Granville Road, Hadlow Road, St Johns Road and The Drive is not served. The B14 runs on to St Paul’s Cray and Orpington.

Plaistow Lane: the council still has not said. It closed the road in mid-July after a void was found near the Plaistow Green roundabout, and said then that it hoped to reopen within days (Bromley Council, 13 July). Eleven weeks on, that page is unchanged, and none of the council’s ten latest news items mentions it. TfL’s live records show no closure and no bus diversion for Plaistow Lane. That points to the road being back in use, but the council has not confirmed it and we are not going to say it has. Check the live map below before routing that way.
Resurfacing. The council’s 2026/27 programme still puts three jobs in autumn 2026: Church Hill in Orpington, Homesdale Road between Old Homesdale Road and Page Heath Lane in Bromley Town, and Old Priory Avenue in St Mary Cray. The four principal-road schemes for the year are Anerley Hill and Anerley Road, Court Road (A224) at Chelsfield, the High Street at Green Street Green (A223) and Sevenoaks Way (A224) between Broomwood Road and Leesons Hill (planned carriageway and footway works). The page gives seasons, not dates. Resurfacing usually means short overnight or off-peak closures, and the dates appear on the signs and the live maps below.
This weekend, 3 October: no planned rail work on Saturday
Saturday 3 October has no planned engineering work on Southeastern’s routes through the borough, and a normal Saturday timetable runs. Sunday is different.
Sunday 4 October: no trains via Denmark Hill
- Victoria to Dover Priory trains via Denmark Hill run non-stop between Victoria and Bromley South, calling at no station in between. If you normally join at Herne Hill, Penge East or Kent House for that service, it will pass you.
- Thameslink’s Blackfriars and Victoria to Sevenoaks trains divert via Beckenham Junction and call additionally at Herne Hill and Beckenham Junction. Replacement buses run between Herne Hill and Beckenham Junction, calling at all stations except Nunhead and Ravensbourne. Paper tickets are accepted on London buses for Nunhead and Ravensbourne.
- Hayes line and Grove Park line trains do not call at Lewisham that day either, with buses between Lewisham and Dartford via Sidcup, because of work between Lewisham and Hither Green.
- Thameslink replacement buses between Herne Hill and Beckenham Junction via Denmark Hill or Catford are accepted at no extra cost, as are London bus routes P12, 78 and 484 between Denmark Hill and Lewisham.

Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October: no Charing Cross trains, Bromley North shut on the Saturday
This is the big one for the north of the borough, and it is worth booking around now. Network Rail is working between Charing Cross and New Cross all weekend, and no trains run to or from Charing Cross or Waterloo East on either day. A reduced service runs between London Bridge and Cannon Street on the Saturday; on the Sunday trains are diverted to Victoria instead.
What that does to the borough’s lines:
- Bromley North line: no trains between Grove Park and Bromley North on Saturday 10 October. Sundridge Park and Bromley North are served by replacement buses only. There is no Sunday service on the branch anyway.
- Grove Park line: Charing Cross to Sevenoaks trains run between Victoria and Sevenoaks instead, and on the Saturday the Cannon Street to Orpington trains do not run at all.
- Hayes line: Charing Cross to Hayes trains run between Victoria and Hayes instead.
- Closed all weekend and served by buses: Grove Park, Elmstead Woods, Chislehurst, Sundridge Park and Bromley North in this borough, with Hither Green, Lee, Mottingham, New Eltham, New Cross and St Johns beyond it.
- Replacement buses run between Greenwich and Sidcup via New Cross and Lewisham, and between Lewisham and Orpington calling at all stations. On the Saturday those buses also call at Sundridge Park, and a non-stop bus runs Grove Park to Bromley North.
- Sidcup line: two trains an hour between Sidcup and Dartford only.
- Tonbridge line: Charing Cross to Ramsgate and Dover trains divert to Victoria and call additionally at Orpington all weekend. On the Sunday they only run between Victoria and Ashford International.
- Tickets are accepted on the Underground between Victoria, Charing Cross, Embankment, Waterloo, Southwark, London Bridge and Cannon Street.

Late nights: next week’s list is not out yet
Southeastern’s late-night list for Monday 5 to Friday 9 October had not been published when we checked on 2 October. Its planned engineering page still shows this week’s notice, which ends on Friday 2 October. That notice is the one that sends the 00:25 London Victoria to Ashford International non-stop from Bromley South, and replaces trains with buses between Lewisham and Dartford via Bexleyheath and Woolwich Arsenal from 00:15 (Southeastern’s planned engineering work page). We will add next week’s changes when Southeastern publishes them.
Our trains guide has the standard timetable pattern.
Driving out: the QEII Bridge shuts again on Saturday, and the first A282 night closure is booked
National Highways publishes a rolling seven-day closure list. The copy dated Thursday 1 October covers the week to Wednesday 7 October.
- A2 eastbound, Dartford Heath to Darenth Interchange, closed on Friday night from 23:00 to 06:00 for resurfacing. The diversion uses local roads. This is the stretch towards Bluewater and the Medway towns.
- A21 northbound at Chipstead, near Sevenoaks: the entry slip and the eastbound exit slip close again on Friday night, 23:00 to 06:00, for investigation work. This is the A21 junction with the M25 at junction 5, about eight miles south of Orpington.
- Saturday 3 October: the QEII Bridge closes clockwise from junction 31 to junction 1A, 21:30 to 09:00 on Sunday, for bridge maintenance. The East Tunnel closes northbound from 21:00 to run the contraflow, and there is no access over the crossing for vehicles over 4.8 metres high. It is the fourth weekend in a row.
- Sunday 4 October: the East Tunnel closes northbound, 22:30 to 05:30, with the same height limit.
- The West Tunnel is closed northbound every weeknight, 21:00 to 05:30, with the junction 1A northbound entry slip closed with it.
- Monday 5 October: the A2 westbound link road from Darenth Interchange to the M25 clockwise at junction 2 closes, 22:00 to 05:30, for emergency carriageway repairs.
- Tuesday 6 October: the M25 anticlockwise link road at junction 5 closes, 22:00 to 05:30, for emergency safety fence repairs between junctions 6 and 5.
- Wednesday 7 October: the A282 southbound carriageway closes between junction 1A and junction 2, 22:00 to 05:30, for emergency safety fence repairs. That is the road south from the QEII Bridge to the A2.
Months of night closures at the crossing are due to start from Wednesday 7 October. National Highways has published notice that it intends to make an order for about seven months of overnight work on the A282 between junction 2 (A2) and junction 30 (A13), starting on or after 7 October. The order would allow closures of both carriageways and all slip roads, contraflows either side of the crossing, and a 50mph limit throughout. The maximum windows are 20:30 to 06:00 Sunday to Thursday and 20:00 to 10:00 on Friday and Saturday. It is a notice of intent, not a made order. The one Wednesday closure on the current list is booked as safety fence repairs, not under that scheme (National Highways notice NH/SE/2026/A282/70, Public Notice Portal).
Across the whole strategic road network, the weekly rhythm in the same report:
| Day | Closures listed nationally |
|---|---|
| Thursday 1 October | 236 |
| Friday 2 October | 223 |
| Saturday 3 October | 85 |
| Sunday 4 October | 82 |
| Monday 5 October | 275 |
| Tuesday 6 October | 274 |
| Wednesday 7 October | 271 |

Who runs which road
This is the fact that saves the most wasted phone calls. Two of the borough’s biggest roads are not the council’s at all: they are TfL red routes. The council’s own page spells out the boundaries. They are the A21 from the M25 to the Lewisham boundary at Bromley Hill, and the A232 from Locksbottom (Croydon Road) to the boundary with Croydon at West Wickham High Street. On those, TfL is responsible for roadworks, street lighting, road and pavement maintenance and winter gritting (Bromley Council red routes).
Everything else that is a public road is coordinated by the council. It permits and schedules works by its own contractors and by the utilities: Thames Water, Southern Gas Networks, BT Openreach, Virgin Media and UK Power Networks. All planned works must display a permit board naming who is digging and the permit number. Unpermitted works can be reported at fix.bromley.gov.uk (Bromley Council roadworks).
The contractor changed this summer. FM Conway took over the council’s highway maintenance work from 1 July 2026 under three contracts worth an estimated £106 million over their life (Bromley Council). It is the firm that now turns up to a reported pothole, a failed street light or a blocked gully. Full detail is in our report on the contract.
The live maps that always have the answer
Roadworks lists date fast; these do not.
- The council’s roadworks map shows current, planned and live traffic information for the borough, using roadworks.org data (Bromley Council).
- one.network carries every permitted dig in the borough on a live national map (one.network).
- TfL traffic status covers the red routes and everything London-wide (tfl.gov.uk/traffic/status), with Tube and rail status alongside.
- National Highways covers the M25, which brushes the borough’s southern edge at the A21 junction (live travel updates).
Station parking, the evergreen version
If disruption pushes you onto the train, the parking picture at the two town-centre stations does not change often. It is also not what most people assume.
- Bromley South has no station car park (Southeastern). The nearest large option is the council’s 24-hour multi-storey, The Hill on Beckenham Lane, with 340 spaces, pay by RingGo (Bromley Council). The council also runs the ANPR-operated Civic Centre car park off Stockwell Close. Full tariffs are in our parking guide.
- Bromley North has an APCOA car park with about 213 spaces (APCOA). APCOA manages station parking across the Southeastern network (Southeastern).
Frequently asked questions
Is Hayes Road closed in Bromley?
Yes, until 18:00 on Wednesday 7 October, in both directions at the junction with Cameron Road, for emergency works. The closure started on 27 August and was first due to end on 25 September. TfL extended it on 29 September. If it slips again, the live maps below will show it first.
Is Perry Street in Chislehurst closed?
Not any more. Perry Street (the A222) was closed at Beaverwood Road for Thames Water works from Tuesday 29 September. On Thursday evening TfL changed the record to temporary signals, with no delays reported. TfL’s bus notices still list diversions of routes 160, 269 and SL3, and the 625 cut short at Leas Green, until the end of Friday 2 October.
What is happening on Cray Avenue?
UK Power Networks has one southbound lane closed on Cray Avenue (the A224) at the junction with Cray Valley Road, St Mary Cray. It started on 30 September and TfL’s record runs to 18:00 on Friday 13 November. TfL says delays are possible.
Why are the R5 and R10 not running to Knockholt?
Emergency works on Rushmore Hill, Pratts Bottom. TfL says buses start and finish at the Three Horse Shoes, with no service between Green Street Green roundabout and Knockholt Pound in either direction. TfL has given no end date.
Is Bromley North station open on 10 and 11 October?
No trains run on the Bromley North branch on Saturday 10 October, and there is no Sunday service on the branch anyway. Grove Park, Elmstead Woods, Chislehurst, Sundridge Park and Bromley North are all closed for the whole weekend of 10 and 11 October, with replacement buses between Lewisham and Orpington and a non-stop bus between Grove Park and Bromley North on the Saturday. No trains run to or from Charing Cross or Waterloo East either day.
Is the Dartford Crossing closed this weekend?
The QEII Bridge is, on Saturday night. It closes clockwise from 21:30 on 3 October to 09:00 on Sunday for bridge maintenance, and the East Tunnel closes northbound from 21:00 to run the contraflow. National Highways’ report says there is no access over the crossing for vehicles over 4.8 metres high. The East Tunnel closes northbound again from 22:30 on Sunday night to 05:30. From Wednesday 7 October, a notice of intent covers about seven months of overnight A282 closures.
Has Plaistow Lane reopened?
Bromley Council has published no reopening notice since it closed the road in July, and its July statement is unchanged. TfL’s live records show no road closure and no bus diversion there, but that is not the council confirming anything. Check the live maps before you rely on it.
Where can I see current roadworks in Bromley?
Two places always have the live answer: the council’s roadworks map and one.network. For the A21 and A232 red routes, check TfL’s traffic status as well.
Who is responsible for the A21 in Bromley?
Transport for London, not the council. The A21 is a red route from the M25 boundary all the way to Bromley Hill, so TfL handles its roadworks, lighting, surfacing and gritting (Bromley Council). The same goes for the A232 between Locksbottom and West Wickham High Street.
How do I report a pothole or unauthorised roadworks in Bromley?
Through the council’s reporting site, fix.bromley.gov.uk, for any road except the two red routes. Legitimate works display a permit board naming the company responsible; works without one are worth reporting. The repair itself is now carried out by FM Conway.
